Newsweek Business Insider – A new book has just been published that exposes the biggest spender in Washington.
A former congressional staffer is calling it “the greatest book in America.”
Former Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas, released The Big Spender in November, and in the new book, he details how he has been keeping his own private business expenses hidden for years from his fellow Republicans in Congress.
In fact, DeLay was only told he was being audited by the IRS on March 6, 2013, because the audit found DeLay had used his wife’s bank account for her business.
The IRS said that wasn’t accurate, and DeLay’s office said he wasn’t being auditors.
The book details DeLay spending tens of thousands of dollars in the past five years on personal travel and business expenses, including hotels and dinners for lawmakers.
And he was the biggest taxpayer in Congress when it comes to his family’s charitable foundation.
DeLay said the book was not meant to be partisan, but rather a reflection of his own personal experience and his personal view on what it takes to be a member of Congress.
“This is my way of telling the story of the most important thing that I have ever done in my life,” DeLay told Newsweek.
“I want people to know how important this is.”
DeLay used his private funds to run the political action committee American Majority PAC, which has raised $2.4 million for the nonprofit group since its inception in 2009.
It also gave him access to a variety of campaign cash, including nearly $1 million he raised in 2014 for House Speaker John Boehner, R.T. He also used the funds to hire a staff of staffers, buy the Capitol Hill restaurant the Blue Ribbon, a steakhouse and wine bar, and buy a house in Washington, D.C., for $15.5 million.
The majority of the money has gone to the political committee, but the group has also used a variety for political activities and to pay for a TV ad campaign to air in New York, New Jersey, Virginia and Pennsylvania.
“It’s just the biggest Spender,” DeLaney said of the Republican Party.
“They’ve been taking advantage of the taxpayers and the American people for decades.
We’re in a situation now where if you’re an incumbent and you want to run for reelection, you can’t.”
DeLaneys wife, Nancy, has not been a frequent visitor to the White House.
He said she rarely has even gone to work at the White Capitol.
“We’ve had her there three times since she’s been there,” De Lay said.
DeLanes wife has also not lived in the White Houses D.
He has visited with Nancy in Washington four times in the last five years.
“There’s nothing special about Nancy,” De LaLay said.
“She’s a good woman.”
The book also sheds light on DeLays efforts to avoid paying taxes, which the Republican has said he did not need to do to avoid becoming a millionaire.
The most recent disclosure showed DeLay paid $7,600 in taxes in 2011.
He had also been paying less than $1,000 in taxes for nearly four years, the book states.
“That’s a tax break he’s never gotten credit for,” DeLaLay said of his wife.
“And it was probably unfair for the IRS to take it.”
He said he believes the book proves his wife was a big spender and that she should have paid taxes for all of her years in Congress, but she didn’t.
“All of these taxes should have been paid,” he said.
