Microsoft has a new mobile app for its Surface Book laptop that is aimed at making the machine more comfortable for people who use a wheelchair.
And it’s just getting started.
Read moreMicrosoft has a big opportunity to become a leader in mobility, and it’s a huge opportunity for its smartphone division, according to Mark Russinovich, the head of its Surface business.
The company announced Tuesday that it’s partnering with the nonprofit Aspen Institute to develop a new platform for mobility in which users can access all of the same apps, including Microsoft Office 365, Skype and Outlook.
It also will offer a new, free, virtual mobility app for users with wheelchairs.
The new platform is called Aspen Connect.
“This is the first time we’ve seen a virtual platform that people with disabilities can use and interact with,” Russinich said in a conference call with analysts.
“They can get on their wheelchairs and move around and they can interact with the Microsoft Store, and that’s the first place we think people with a mobility disability should be able to access it.”
Microsoft’s new app is a bit of a mixed bag.
It’s designed for people with some mobility issues but also includes some features for people without.
For example, users can sign up for free to use Microsoft Teams, Microsoft’s online message system.
That’s where people can create new groups for other Microsoft employees to chat with, share news and share content.
Microsoft also plans to launch a new app that will be available as a free download for the Surface Book and the new Surface Pro, and then it plans to release a free version of Microsoft Teams for people living with mobility issues.
The app, called Microsoft Connect, will provide users with a unified portal to access all the Microsoft services, including the Microsoft Office suite, the Skype messaging service and Microsoft Teams.
Microsoft’s plan is to roll out the new Microsoft Connect app to people who have disabilities within 30 days of its release.
The company also said it would launch a paid version of the app as early as April.
The app will also include a new feature called Microsoft Live Tasks, which will allow people with mobility disabilities to take their jobs online.
In a blog post announcing the app, Microsoft said that it will give users access to Office 365 and Skype through a unified dashboard, making it easier for them to manage work schedules.
The dashboard will allow them to work from home or from a smartphone.
The Microsoft Connect portal will allow for the same features as Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Office, Russinikos said.
The Microsoft Connect application will be a free app for people to use, Russkinich said.
It will be accessible through the Microsoft app store and will be free to download for anyone with a disability.
But people with wheelchair access will have to purchase the app separately.
The new app will be part of Microsoft’s plan to make its Surface line of laptops more accessible to people with different needs, Russinsaid.
The device is available for pre-order in the U.S. starting Friday.
